Family vehicles
Cars generate dates: oil changes, tire rotations, registration, inspection, insurance renewal, and recalls. A vehicles Sheet plus a shared calendar handles most of it.
Recalls are the strongest piece. NHTSA publishes a public recalls API by make, model, and year, and a VIN decoding API (vPIC). Grok Bot can run code on its computer, so it can check those for each car on a schedule.
What's possible
- Monthly recall check per vehicle via NHTSA
- Service reminders based on your owner's manual schedule
- Registration and insurance renewal reminders from notices
- A glovebox folder in Drive
Why it matters
Open recalls and lapsed registrations are both avoidable.
What Grok Bot can and can't do here
| Piece | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA recall checks | ✓ Works directly | Public API; no account needed. |
| VIN decode | ✓ Works directly | NHTSA vPIC API. |
| DMV and insurer notices | ↺ Works via a bridge | Read from Gmail or scanned letters. |
| Connected-car apps | ✗ Not possible today | No connectors found for automaker apps; developer APIs like Smartcar exist but need setup. |
✓ = through an official Grok Bot connector, its browser, or a public API. ↺ = needs email, Google, IFTTT, a developer account, or your sign-in. ✗ = no supported route we could find.
The setup, in short
The Vehicles & Home Maintenance guide covers:
- Vehicles sheet
- Recall routine
- Renewal reminders
The house rule in every Butler guide: the bot reads, sorts, files, tracks, and drafts. It asks first before it sends, pays, deletes, or contacts anyone, and it never guesses a date or an amount.
Frequently asked questions
Does it know my car's service schedule?
Only from your owner's manual or dealer paperwork you give it. It won't invent intervals.
Can it renew registration?
It can open your DMV site in its browser, but payment and submission need you.
Is VIN sensitive?
It's on your windshield, but keep it in the sheet, not shared publicly.
