Grok Bot Weekly Household Ledger Routine
The Weekly ledger routine is part of The Butler's Ledger room. It runs fridays on Grok Bot and spending by category, recurring charges, receipts.
It uses Bank feed, Venmo, Gmail, Google Drive. Nothing is sent, paid, or deleted without your approval.
Free trials roll over, annual renewals arrive unannounced, and charges show up under cryptic merchant names. Bills come in by mail, email, and app, each with its own due date.
What the Weekly ledger routine does
Spending by category, recurring charges, receipts. It is one of the routines in the Ledger room (I watch the bank, Venmo, and cards, and name the bills, the due dates, and the waste. I never pay anything.).
- Watches the bank, Venmo, and cards through a bank feed where available, or through statements you save.
- Keeps a bills list with payees, due dates, and amounts, each taken from a source.
- Lists every recurring charge, and flags ones that are new, increased, or doubled.
- Logs receipts from email.
- Never pays, transfers, cancels, or changes autopay. It drafts, and you decide.
The routine instruction
This is the wording from The Butler's Ledger room PDF. Square-bracket fields are filled in during setup. Replace the bracketed parts with your own details.
- "Weekly ledger": every Friday at 5:00 PM. The week's spending by category, recurring charges seen, and receipts logged. Post it here.
Connectors it needs
- Bank feed (where available): Open Connect apps and look for a bank or brokerage connector. If there isn't one for your bank, use statements instead.
- Venmo (via bank feed or statements): Venmo activity comes in through a connected bank feed if it covers Venmo, or from Venmo statements you save to Butler/05 Ledger/Statements.
- Gmail (required): Finds bills, receipts, and renewal notices.
- Google Drive (required): Holds the Ledger sheet and any statements you upload.
Grok Bot 101 lists Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive as connectors and says you can connect more than one account per service.
How to set it up
- Connect the accounts above from Connect apps.
- Run the job once in chat and correct the output until it's right.
- Ask Grok Bot to save it as a routine at the time you want, and check the instruction and schedule it writes.
- Pause it any time; the changelog (v0.52.0) added pause and resume for routines.
House rules: what it always asks first
- Ask first before any payment, purchase, transfer, or checkout.
- Ask first before cancelling or changing any subscription or autopay.
- Ask first before sharing financial data outside this chat.
Limits to know
- This is not financial or tax advice.
- Which banks have a connector varies. Without one, the Ledger only knows the statements and emails you give it.
- The official Grok Bot changelog says Bots can pay with X Money or Stripe Link, so the Ledger rules and an Ask first rule forbid paying.
Try saying
- "What's due this week?"
- "What is this charge?" (paste the merchant name)
- "Which subscriptions went up this year?"
Other routines in the Ledger room
- Daily money check (Daily, before the briefing): New transactions, bills due in 7 days, anything unusual.
- Monthly subscription review (Monthly, on the 1st): Every recurring charge, changes, renewals. You decide.
- Morning briefing section (Daily): Bills due, unusual charges, trials ending.
Frequently asked questions
How often does the Weekly ledger routine run?
By default: fridays. You choose the exact time during setup, and each run uses your Grok Bot usage, so fewer runs cost less.
Will the Weekly ledger routine send or pay anything on its own?
No. The Butler's house rules require your approval before anything is sent, paid, deleted, or shared.
Where does the result show up?
In the Bot's chat, and the relevant items are folded into The Butler's morning briefing.
