Home Assistant and Grok Bot
Home Assistant ships an official Model Context Protocol Server integration, which lets AI clients that speak MCP control exposed entities. Grok Bot 101 says Grok Bot supports MCP servers.
The catch: Grok Bot runs in the cloud. Your Home Assistant must be reachable from the internet over HTTPS, and you decide which entities are exposed. Home Assistant also has a REST API as an alternative.
What's possible
- Ask 'is the garage open?' (read-only is a good start)
- Daily energy or temperature summary
- Turn on lights at a time
- Alerts in your morning briefing
Why it matters
It's the one smart home platform with an official, AI-oriented door.
What Grok Bot can and can't do here
| Piece | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MCP connection | ✓ Works directly | Home Assistant MCP Server integration + Grok Bot MCP support. |
| REST API | ✓ Works directly | Long-lived token via the bot's secure form. |
| Local-only install with no remote access | ✗ Not possible today | The cloud computer can't reach it. |
✓ = through an official Grok Bot connector, its browser, or a public API. ↺ = needs email, Google, IFTTT, a developer account, or your sign-in. ✗ = no supported route we could find.
The setup, in short
The Smart Home & Alexa guide covers:
- Exposure choices
- Remote access options
- Read-only first
The house rule in every Butler guide: the bot reads, sorts, files, tracks, and drafts. It asks first before it sends, pays, deletes, or contacts anyone, and it never guesses a date or an amount.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Nabu Casa?

Is this beginner friendly?
